Self Esteem and Customer Service Among

Topics for June  3-4 Conference in Grand Forks

 

Dr. Thom Flamboe, Vice President for Academics at Presentation College in Aberdeen will present on  “Peanut Butter, Self Esteem, and Other Blue Light Specials” during the closing session for the 2009 Dakota ACAC Conference June 3-4 in Grand Forks, ND.

Dr. Flamboe's presentation is based on his more than 30 years of work with parents, children, teachers and other professionals. His speech which is both humorous and inspiring is rooted in the risks that we must take as we grow through life. It will explore various risks, including: The Risk of Liking Oneself, The Risk of Accepting Differences, The Risk of Living Each Day to the Fullest, The Risk of Making Mistakes, and The Risk of Having a Sense of Humor.

Dr. Thom’s talk will move in both physically and emotionally – so be careful! This could be a dangerous talk!!!

Clark Wold, President of Education Assistance Corporation,  will deliver the keynote presentation for the Conference.   Wold will address customer service principles as they apply to student services personnel in a program entitled, "What?? You Want Me To Be Nice To People?"

He will use his years of experience in a private college, a university system office, and a student loan agency to help participants gain a new perspective on "being nice to people."

He will also present a breakout session/discussion on the current state of student financial aid.  Planned breakout sessions include:

Current and Future Issues in Admissions - An overview on the current state of policies affecting admissions and financial aid at the state and regional level, by two experts who are "in the trenches": Clark Wold, Education Assistance Corp., & Kris Getting Roach, Director of Admissions & Financial Aid, University of St. Thomas, and member of the NACAC Board of Directors

Managing Student Workers & Ambassadors -
This session will discuss ways to strengthen student worker programs and offer tips to help keep student workers motivated. Presenters: Brooks Hetle, Admissions Representative and Campus Visit Coordinator, University of Mary; and Sara Van de Streek, Admission Counselor, North Dakota State University

3) Advanced Placement: Successful Programs, and Implications for Higher Education -- This session will explore higher education's current use and perception of AP, and will address the resources the College Board has put in place to assist in the increasingly important dialogue between higher education and K-12. Presenter: Scott Smith, Educational Mgr., The College Board

 Admissions Office Structure - In a time of economic crises - are you using your staff resources wisely? Attend this session to learn how other colleges and universities have structured their admissions office.This will be a discussion format so conference attendees may share office structures and best practices. Discussions on issues pertaining to structures which may not work well or need to be updated will also be addressed. Presenters: Stephanie Moser, Director of Admissions, The University of SD, & Jobey Lichtblau, Director of Admissions, North Dakota State University.

Career Clusters - Connecting Education and Careers
- Career Clusters and Plans of Study are curriculum frameworks that connect secondary and postsecondary education with the world of work.  Each Career Cluster is based upon "common knowledge and skills" required by occupations  and the coursework required. Closer connections between student interests and skills, education, and the job market will result in higher graduation and retention rates and better job placement. This session will provide participants with broad information on career clusters; and more specifically, what North Dakota is doing to meet the needs of learners in today's changing and demanding job market. Presenter: Claire Fitzgerald, North Dakota Department of Career and Technical Education.

Taking Off in the World of Admissions! - An interactive discussion for newer and intermediate admissions personnel on the trials and rewards of  admissions work on the practical level, both on the road and on campus. How to "earn your wings" in the world of admissions. Moderators: Amanda Weischedel, Northern State University, Admissions Counselor and Nicole Hammer, Presentation College, Admissions Representative

Senior Admissions Roundtable - An interactive discussion on issues involving admission directors and other senior personnel involved in planning and policy issues on campus.  Moderators:  Stephanie Hoffman and Travis Vlasman, The University of South Dakota; and Karen Riley, North Dakota State College of Science.

Surviving Social Media -
There are numerous forms of social media:  networking sites,  blogs, and Live Chat. With all of the mediums that can be utilized, it may intimidate people and seem difficult to begin. This session will discuss the process that the Enrollment Services Office at UND has gone through while exploring the world of social media. We’ll talk about the research we’ve done, roadblocks along the way, and steps we’ve taken in using this constantly-evolving recruitment tool.  Presenters: University of North Dakota Enrollment Services Staff.

3) Recruiting Diverse Students  - Students from all different types of backgrounds attend our institutions.  Learn how to address the individual needs of students and their families as they search for a college.  Find out what other colleges are doing to ensure that all students have a voice at the table and are supported though out their college experience. Presenter: Shanti Behrens, Admission Counselor, North Dakota State University.

The Dakota ACAC Conference will be at the Alerus Center/Canad Inn in Grand Forks, ND.
